(WHAS11)--A Bullitt County man appeared in court Wednesday morning on charges of assaulting his girlfriend's twin boys.

18-year-old Samuel Harris, Jr. is accused of abusing 4-month-old twin boys.

Both boys were taken to Kosair Children's Hospital where, according to family members, Aiden is in critical condition and is considered technically brain dead and Braden is suffering from serious injuries.

"They are going to run some test in a little while and if the tests, if he don't show no brain response, I guess they are going to make the call and pronounce him dead.  And, hopefully he gets a murder charge and hopefully he gets charges for what he did to Braden too," Michael Sallee, family friend, said.

Family members said Harris confessed to the police, saying the boys would not stop crying.

Conny Spann, the mother's aunt, said the boys were under Harris' care while the twins' mother went out  to get something to eat.

"The boyfriend decided he couldn't get the baby to sleep, or to quit crying and so he picked the baby up and threw the baby across the room onto the couch.  Um, there's some wood underneath the couch or whatever that was sticking out , then he picked the baby up and started shaking the baby," Conny Spann, the mother's aunt, said.

Span said after Harris shook the baby he realized the baby wasn't breathing and at that time Harris squeezed Aiden's chest, fracturing all of his ribs.

"When he realized that wasn't helping to bring the baby back, he went to get help," Span said.

Harris was arraigned Wednesday morning. He pleaded not guilty and is being held on a $500,000 full cash bond.
