(WHAS11) - There are more developments in the case of a Bullitt County teacher charged with sex abuse involving an underage female student.

The alleged victim and her family have filed a lawsuit against the teacher and the school principal and three assistant principals.

In January, Timothy Lands found himself out of the classroom and facing a judge.

The former teacher of the year at Bullitt Central High School is charged with sex abuse involving one of his students.

Now he's facing a civil lawsuit along with school administrators.

“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare and so easy to imagine how a young lady can find herself in that situation where it looks like a good idea,” says Attorney Ann Oldfather.

Ann Oldfather is one of the attorneys representing the alleged victim and her family.  They are now suing Lands, the school principal and three assistant principals.

“We have an opportunity to change the system. What could Bullitt Central High School have been doing to allow this to go on under their noses for four months,” says Oldfather.

Attorney Beth Coleman is also representing the family.

“She is struggling the life she has today is far different than the life she had a couple of months ago,” says Coleman.

The lawsuit claims that the school principal told the alleged victim she needed to come to school and put on a quote "happy face" in reference to the investigation.

The suit goes on to say the school staff didn't do enough to stop the alleged incidents from happening.

The complaint says that starting in October of last year, Lands and the girl engaged in various sexual acts in lands classroom both during and after school.

“These administrators are outstanding people who really care about kids,” says school system attorney Eric Farris.

Attorney Eric Farris said they have no reason to believe the school administrators were negligent in any way.

WHAS11 News caught up with Lands Monday at his home but he said he couldn't comment on the matter.

Lands is still on suspension from the district right now without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
