Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11)- Students at Bellarmine University are going green and having to use little extra elbow grease.
The Urban Sustainability Workshop class taught by Brian Barnes is hard at work building compost boxes, without power. Barnes says it's the rustic way with just hand saws, hammers, and nails.
The compost project is being funded by a nearly $1,500 grant from Brightside. Barnes says the students are not only learning about sustainability projects, but also about the hard work to make them happen.
Barnes says compost will be ready to go to fertilize plants next spring.
The new compost facility is on the Bellarmine Farm, which was created last year for hands-on education and fresh produce for Bellarmine University’s dining hall.
