(WHAS11) - This Project Green is about energy independence at Fort Knox.
On Thursday, Fort Knox won the 8th consecutive Secretary of the Army Energy Award, for the state of the art technology the base is using every day.
Fort Knox can track their energy consumption and creation every hour of the day.
Secretary of the Army John McHugh made a trip to Fort Knox last week to see what the project was all about.
“They really have a vision and are working on a plan forward in the future to become what we call net zero. To actually save and produce as much energy right here on base at fort Knox as they consume,” said McHugh.
McHugh says becoming "net zero" is not only important for the environment, but also for military security.
He says when you're creating your own energy, you're less vulnerable to energy interruptions from outside and you don't have to put as many troops in harm’s way.
