Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - A community orchard project is bringing fresh produce to one local neighborhood.
Welcome to the Portland Orchard at the corner of West Main and Dr. W.J. Hodge Street in Louisville's Portland neighborhood.
The orchard, which sits on about an acre and a half of land, is run by dozens of neighborhood volunteers with the goal of providing free, fresh fruit to residents.
"Through a series of conversations we were dreaming about what could be done here. We talked about many things, anywhere from an urban farm to wildflowers and native grasses. When the orchard idea was brought to the table, it was just very clear from the beginning how that fits our neighborhood and it is a good project for us to be a part of," said Matthew Huested of the Portland Orchard.
Organizers of the Portland Orchard project say one of the goals is to create a farmer's market that could lead to new jobs.
