Official Contest Rules

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.  Limit one entry per band. All subsequent entries from a single band will be void.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:  The contest is open to bands who are legal residents of Kentuckiana and who are eighteen (18) years or older as of March 23, 2012 and who are not professional singers with a current recording contract. Kentuckiana is defined as Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Orange, Perry, Scott, and Washington counties in Southern Indiana, and Adair, Breckinridge, Bullitt, Carroll, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Taylor, Trimble, and Washington counties in Kentucky. 

Employees, temporary employees, independent contractors or interns of WHAS-TV (“Sponsor”), Belo Corp., their subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotional agencies and other contest sponsors, and such employees’ immediate family and household members, are not eligible to enter. The term “immediate family members” includes spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and grandchildren.

HOW TO ENTER:  Bands will be required to fully complete the official entry forms which are available at greatdaylive.com. The entry forms, a recent (taken within last six months) photograph of the band and a DVD containing one cover song of the band’s choice and one original song of the band’s choice must be postmarked or delivered to the following address :

The completed entry may also be emailed with a digital photo and YouTube link(s) of the band’s performance to GreatDay@whas11.com.

Note that the total time of both performances must not exceed ten (10) minutes and the performance of the original song must not exceed five (5) minutes.


Entry period starts at 10:00a.m. on 3/23/2012 and ends at 4:00 p.m. on 4/13/2012.
Judging and semi-finalist selection will take place between 4/16 – 4/20/2012
Band Performances on Great Day Live! between 4/26 – 5/10/2012
Online voting to select finalists starts at 10:00a.m. on 5/11/2012 and ends at 11:59 pm on 5/15/2012

Live show with two (2) finalists and Winner announcement on 5/18/2012

Mail-in entries must be postmarked by the stated deadline.  No submissions will be accepted after the deadline for any reason.  All entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned.  Sponsor is not responsible for lost, damaged, late, illegible or incomplete entries or for any postage due, late mail or delivery related to this contest. These entries may be deemed ineligible. 

SEMI-FINALIST SELECTION:  Eleven (11) bands will be selected as potential semi-finalists from all eligible entries postmarked or received by the deadline. Semi-finalist selection shall take place between 4/16 and 4/20/2012 at WHAS-TV, 520 W. Chestnut Street, Louisville, KY 40202. Semi-finalists will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of WHAS11 personnel. Bands will be judged based on the following criteria, applied equally:  (a) skill, execution and creativity, (b) poise and energy, (c) originality, and (d) likely audience appeal and unique look.  Decisions of the judges are final in all respects.  Semi-finalists will be notified by phone or email on or before 4/20/2012.

Members of the semi-finalist bands will be required to complete an Affidavit of Eligibility and Publicity Release/Liability Release and a Music License Agreement.  Failure of any band member to fully execute and return required documentation will result in the band's disqualification and selection of an alternate band.  Upon verification of eligibility, the semi-finalists will be required to perform live on Great Day Live! (the “Program”) on the date determined by a random drawing to be held on 4/23/2012.  If any contestant in any band selected as a semi-finalist is unable to perform on the date specified, such band will be disqualified and an alternate finalist selected. 


1.    Semi-Finalist Program Performances:  The eleven (11) semi-finalists will perform live on the Program between 4/26 – 5/10/2012 on the date determined at the live drawing. Bands are required to perform the original song submitted on its entry DVD. 

2.    Finalist Selection:  From 10:00 a.m. on 5/11/2012 through 11:59 p.m. ET on 5/15/2012, the eleven (11) semi-finalist videos will be posted at greatdaylive.com where visitors to the site will vote for their selections. Number of votes per visitor to the site is not limited. The two (2) videos receiving the highest number of votes at the end of the voting period will be selected as the finalists and notified on 5/16/2012. In the event of a tie, the winner(s) will be selected by a random drawing of the tied entries.  The decisions of the Sponsor will be final.

3.    Grand Prize Winner Selection:  The two finalist bands will perform live at the YUM! Center Plaza on 5/18/2012.  At the conclusion of the performances, the winner of the Great Bands Live! will be revealed.  The Winner will be the band with the highest number of votes that are determined during the online voting.


The winning band will receive $3,000.00 in cash and prizes; The runner-up band will receive $700 in cash and prizes  All eleven (11) bands and members will receive a commemorative T-Shirt and $25 gift card.  Additional gifts may be awarded at Sponsor’s discretion. No substitution of any prize, except at Sponsor’s discretion.  No cash redemption of prizes or gifts is allowed. Rights to the prize are not transferable.  Winner is responsible for all federal, state, and local income taxes on prize value.  An IRS form 1099 will be issued for all prizes with a value in excess of $600.

BAND REGULATIONS: Bands must perform live on the Program.  Bands are not allowed to use pre-recorded sound material. Pyrotechnics are not allowed at any time. Any band overrunning their allotted time will be faded out.  Any band member or person associated with the band found to be in the possession of or under the influence of alcohol or any illegal drug, in possession of drug paraphernalia or firearms on Sponsor's premises or other contest venues, will result in the band's immediate disqualification from the competition.  The failure of any band member or person associated with the band to follow any and all instructions of Program personnel in regards to the Program may, in Sponsor's sole discretion, result in the band's disqualification from the competition.

GENERAL TERMS:  By entering the contest, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules.  Entry constitutes permission to use the contestant’s biographical information, name, picture, likeness, recorded performance, voice and photographs and/or motion pictures of the contestant for purposes of trade, publicity and promotion for no additional compensation (except where prohibited by law).  It is understood that the contestants’ performances and/or participation in the Program may be recorded and broadcast as part of the Program and/or promotional materials therefore and contestants consent to the same.  Contestants who participate in the Program production may be required at Sponsor’s direction to participate in taping of promotional segments for the Program and/or Sponsor’s advertisers or promotional partners. Contestants release Sponsors, Belo Corp., their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, other contest sponsors and each of their directors, officers, employees and agents, and all others associated with the development and execution of this contest, from any and all liability from injury, loss or damage of any kind resulting from participation in this contest or acceptance or use of any prize.  Void where prohibited or restricted by law.  All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.  Conduct of auditions and production of the Program will be solely within Sponsor’s discretion.  All decisions of Sponsor and the contest judges concerning the contest will be final and binding in all respects.
