Though 2009 was a terrible year economically for millions of people, financier Bernard Madoff became the symbol of financial disaster. Madoff's Ponzi scheme is considered the biggest financial fraud in history, at just under $65 billion. A 162-page list of thousands of people who lost money investing with Madoff was made public in a bankruptcy court filing. The list included dozens of celebrities, politicians and charities but did not say how much each lost. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison after pleading guilty to 11 felony counts. "I am responsible for a great deal of suffering and pain. I understand that," Madoff said at the time of his sentencing. "I live in a tormented state now, knowing of all the pain and suffering that I have created." (Getty Images)
