The411 with Sherlene Shanklin: Many of the films at the 5th Annual Louisville's International Festival of Film have positive messages but one stood out for me. It was NightLights. The feature film is about a young woman who fights a balance between a new love and a twin brother who’s autistic. The film chronicles their unbreakable bond. Erin Logan starring Shawna Wladron, (Little Giants, The American President) and her brother Jacob co-starred by Stephen Louis Grush, (ABC’s Lucky 7) have a secluded, private life until Erin tries her hand at love but now she has to deal with her new friendship and her brother which puts a lot of pressure on her. She wants to be happy but her main priority is to maintain a safe and happy environment for her sibling. The filmmakers of NightLights drew inspiration from the real life stories of families with autism across the country. The film’s Director, David Midell, is himself a special educator and behavioral therapist with nearly ten years of experience in special needs classrooms and programs. Families who can relate to Waldron and Grush's characters, give a two thumbs up because the situations in the film were true to life. A mother of an eight (8) year-old with autism says after she had an opportunity to see the film that it touched her heart so deep because we live it every day. She wanted to thank the producer and director of the film for opening up a world of understanding for those whom are still unaware of what families of persons with autism have to go through on a day to day basis. I spoke to Adam Dick, producer for PlayOn Productions, which is based out of Chicago, Illinois and he says "It is an honor to be coming to Louisville to premiere our film NightLights. LIFF is a unique, thriving cultural event, and we're humbled to be included amongst such an esteemed group of filmmakers."
