PHOENIX -- Rockstar Bret Michaels is giving back to the Valley hospital that he says saved his life.

On Tuesday he unveiled a music and relaxation room at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

In 2010, Michaels was rushed to the hospital after suffering from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a life-threatening type of stroke.

He was in critical condition, and remained at Barrow Neurological Institute for the duration of his treatment.

St. Joseph's Hospital is the home of Barrow Neurological Institute and Michaels was treated by Barrow neurosurgeons. He then returned to St. Joseph's in 2011 to undergo a heart procedure to close a hole in his heart.

"It is a blessing and I say this by the grace of God and a lot of good medical attention, that I'm standing here," Michaels said.

Michaels has since fully recovered, and decided to give back with the Bret Michaels Hospitality and Music Room. It's decorated with guitars and never-before-seen inspirational pictures and art. The room also features many pieces of Michaels' personal music memorabilia.

"Regardless of what you like and what you listen to music is such a huge healer for people," Michaels said. "It gets you up when you need to get up and if you're feeling down, there's music to relate to. I think in this room people can find almost anything they want to relate to."

It's a place where patients and their families can escape, and the hospital couldn't be more grateful.

"What i found is that the man who wrote every rose has its thorns, is actually a rose among thorns," said Dr. Joseph Zabramski, Bret's neurosurgeon at St. Joseph's Barrow Neurological Institute.

St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center treated more than 31,000 patients in 2011 in the hospital, and 450,000 patients in its out-patient clinics and other facilities. Barrow Neurological Institute does more brain surgeries than any other hospital in the United States.
