UNDATED (AP) -- He lived in an era when people who wrote books were famous -- not like now when people write books because they are famous. Author Gore Vidal has died. He was 86 and a family member says he had been ill a while -- and eventually succumbed to pneumonia. Vidal rubbed shoulders with presidents and other high-ranking people of his day. But he wasn't shy about ripping them in print he felt the need to. That may have been why while he was popular with fans, the writing establishment was stingy with giving Gore awards and honors throughout his career.
