Police: Man shot and killed during robbery in Portland neighborhood

Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - WHAS11 News has learned more about the store owner who was shot and killed in an apparent robbery in the Portland neighborhood.

Police are looking for two men who walked into the New York Fashions store on Lytle Street and shot 37-year-old Mohamed Abdelrahman.

Abdelrahman was part owner of the store and opened the business about a year and a half ago.

“When you have someone that’s trying to do the right thing to make a living and somebody comes in to their place of business where they are trying to make a living like the rest of us and this event happens it’s obviously extremely tragic,” says Barry Wilkerson of the LMPD homicide.

Abdelrahman was a father of two young children and had just moved to this country 7 years ago.

A smiling father and devoted husband; that is the way Mohamed Abdelrahman’s brother describes him.

“I couldn’t believe that had happened to my brother something like that because of his character,” he says.

He came to America 7 years ago from Sudan hoping to create a better and safer life for his family.

The 37-year-old was part owner of New York Fashions on Lytle Street in the Portland neighborhood.

He was shot and killed in the store late yesterday afternoon.

Abdelrahman’s family members were in the store when the shooting happened.

They say that two young men walked into the store, fired a shot into the ceiling and then shot Abdelrahman who was standing right by this clothing rack.

Family members tell me after the suspect fired the shots he then demanded everyone give up their wallets, never touching the register or taking any clothes.

Police say the suspects were spotted at other stores close to New York Fashions shortly before the shooting.

The only description police have of the suspects is that they’re black men in their early twenties.

“We’ve received no other tips or leads we have some good witness accounts again we ask the public if they were in the area and they saw people we would like you input also,” says Barry Wilkerson.

For the victim and his family, it’s an American dream shattered.
