LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The KFC Yum Center is a hub of entertainment, but on Wednesday, it was all about education and success.

“We are the future leaders in our community,” Gavin Thomas, a 9th grader at Phoenix School of Technology in Louisville said. He was listening carefully at the rally.

“It's refreshing to know they care and they actually want us to be appreciated,” Thomas said.

Thomas was one of 1,800 Jefferson County Public School students at the Journey 14/15 event.
It’s the district’s kick off to helping kids achieve their goals.

“A lot about today is setting goals not just for the summer, but for your whole life,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said.

From the mayor to the police chief to U of L Women's basketball coach, Jeff Walz, they all talked to the kids about overcoming adversity . . . and then, the big surprise for the kids: UofL National Champ Peyton Siva.

“When I was younger people always came back and talked to us, so this is a chance to come back and tell these guys that they can achieve anything,” Siva said.

WHAS11 partnered with JCPS and the Yum Center for this event.

Gavin Thomas is one young man that seems to be going places. His teachers call him a leader and he's focused and listens to what he hopes to achieve in the future.

“To make a difference in my community and get a 4.0,” Thomas said of his goals.

We want to keep this momentum going here at WHAS11.

We are encouraging everyone to do something to get involved in helping young people find their success and achieve their goals.

We are using #dosomething on social media.

Spread the word and get involved.
