LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A former University of Louisville basketball player hit the court Monday to teach children how to be leaders.

Robbie Valentine held his camp at the Portland Community Center where children ages 6 to 17 learned the fundamentals of basketball, the principles of teamwork and what it takes to be a leader.

Valentine says for those to be successful on the court, they also need to excel in the classroom.

“Jefferson County’s starting school back this week and between myself and metro parks, we wanted to get together and give the kids some motivation – something fun right before the start of school. Talk to them about the importance of starting school on the right track, listening to their teachers, respecting their teachers and basically have a really, really good year,” he said.

Valentine says it can’t all fall on the children and parents need to step up and take an active role in education as well.
