Turning up the heat Memorial Day weekend!

After a cooler start to the workweek with scattered showers and storms, temperatures will begin to soar! By Wednesday, the sun will be out in full force and stick around right through Memorial Day weekend. Look for hot and humid conditions starting Friday with temperatures in the low 90s. We will also be very close to record high temperatures.

Here are safety tips for heat from the NWS:

1.)  Slow down.  Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11 AM and 5 PM.

2.)  Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

3.)  Foods that increase metabolic heat production and dehydration, such as proteins, should be avoided.

4.)  Drink plenty of water!  Drink water even if you do not yet feel thirsty.

5.)  Avoid alcoholic beverages.

6.)  Do not increase your salt intake unless directed by a physician.

7.)  Spend as much time in air conditioning as possible.

8.)  Stay out of the sun as much as possible.  Sunburn will make it that much more difficult for your body to dissipate heat.  When spending time in the sun, use a sunscreen with a high SPF.

9)  If suffering symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, get medical attention immediately.
