Severe storm chances this evening

Be ready for strong to severe storms this evening.  A few storms could fire up as early as late afternoon over parts of southern Indiana, but most areas won't see the rain and storms until 8pm or later.  Below is the Slight Risk of severe weather from the Storm Prediction Center.  All of Kentuckiana is under the Slight Risk.  The second map is the tornado risk, highest north of the Ohio River. Outside of the storms it will be warm and windy today, with winds gusting 15-35 mph.

Several factors are coming together for severe weather chances this evening.  The main player is the strong jet stream, with winds 50-100 mph above 5,000 feet.  If storms tap into those winds we could have damaging straight line winds.  The energy for severe weather will calm down overnight.

An interesting note - We had record warm temperatures this morning, and when we had the last record warm-low temperature on this date in 1993, later that day severe storms brought damaging winds and an EF -1 tornado in Mercer County.
