Clear skies this evening allowed us to see the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect nicely on the Infrared Satellite. Larger cities consistently have higher temperatures, 6-10 degrees, than surrounding areas because of a greater retention of heat by buildings, concrete, and asphalt. Also adding to the problem is the heat generated by the combustion of fuels in factories, heating/cooling systems and vehicles.
