January 17, 2012 will go down in the record books as the worst January tornado outbreak on record in the region. Nine tornadoes in total touched down in Indiana and Kentucky. All the right ingredients were in place for severe weather to occur. Earlier in the day we had temperatures into the 60s, a strong southerly wind at the surface, and a strong low level jet. A potent cold front was approaching from the west late in the morning with a squall line just ahead of it. Behind the front temperatures dropped around 30 degrees into the 30s! The clash of the warm and cold air fired up severe storms all along the squall line with quick spin up tornadoes. Here is the list of tornadoes across Kentuckiana.

1)      EF-1 Tornado in northeast Jefferson County Kentucky
2)      EF-1 Tornado in Southeast Jefferson County Kentucky
3)      EF-0 Tornado in Jefferson County Indiana
4)      EF-0 Tornado in Clark County Indiana
5)      EF-1 Tornado inFloyd County Indiana
6)      EF-1 Tornado in DuBois County
7)      EF-0 Tornado in DuBois County
8)      EF-1 Tornado in Scott County Kentucky
9)      EF-2 Tornado in Simpson and Allen Counties Kentucky
