Didn't we hear the same thing in 1945 from Roswell, NM...?  Just kidding...

Everyday the Nation Weather Service releases more than 100 weather balloons!  Attached to the helium or hydrogen filled balloon is a weather instrument box call a radiosonde.  This little box collects and transmits data on air pressure, temperature, humidity and wind direction/speed from the surface to about 20 miles into the sky.  Meteorologists use the data collected from weather balloons to help them forecast.

For more information about weather balloons and what to do if you every find one, check out the following link... www.noaa.gov/features/02_monitoring/balloon.html
