(BLOG) – Well the madness is over. No I’m not talking about March Madness, I mean the madness that is Derby time in Louisville! Growing up outside of Kentucky I knew about the Derby and watched the race on television. What I never realized is that Derby time means so much more in the city of Louisville. Please enjoy some of my favorite photos from the week.
I attended the Great Bed Races, the Pegasus Parade and Oaks for work. I even got the chance to go to another event not associated with the Kentucky Derby Festival that featured a UK basketball player.
First up, the bed races. At first glance when I was assigned to cover the bed races I honestly thought it was some sort of horseracing term that I didn’t know. When I did my research I found out that the bed races literally means that people race beds around!
When I arrived I saw dancers, cross-dressers and even Big Boy!
I also saw beds that were better looking than parade floats! I had a blast! I’m also happy to report that I did not suffer any injuries even though I was right in the middle of the race action on the floor and some of the beds were out of control.
The next event I attended was not associated with the Kentucky Derby Festival but I went as a loyal Kentucky basketball fan. Terrence Jones made an appearance at Wick’s Pizza on Baxter Avenue
He greeted fans and then he showed off his musical abilities while rapping "Teach Me Bout Kentucky.”
On Thursday I went to the Pegasus Parade. There I saw balloons and floats that rivaled the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
I also had the opportunity to watch Cyndi Lauper rehearse and then perform her classic “True Colours.” She was very friendly to the local girls who were performing with her.
Friday was Oaks day and I got to take in all the sights and fashion that are the Kentucky Oaks. I enjoyed the creativity of some of the spectators.
Out of all the events associated with the Derby this was by far my favorite.
I did not make any Derby bets this year but I thoroughly enjoyed “the fastest two minutes in sports.” I have decided to expand my horizons from just basketball and football to horseracing. Once I learn more about the sport I will be sure to bring you the latest updates. Thank you for reading.
