Kentucky Senate President David Williams (R-Burkesville), omnipresent at the National Conference of State Legislatures in Louisville, confirmed to WHAS11 this morning what he told the Courier-Journal, Tuesday. Williams says he has discussed a gubernatorial run with Agriculture Secretary Richie Farmer, with the former University of Kentucky basketball player as a potential Lt. Governor candidate.
Williams would offer no timeline on when he might make a decision or announce his plans, but has said in the past that he wants to focus on the elections for the statehouse this fall, first.
Meanwhile, Kentucky Senator Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown), also speculated as a potential Lt. Governor candidate, would not divulge the extent of his own conversations with Williams. Though Thayer has been linked in the past with a possible gubernatorial run by Todd County businessman Bill Johnson, he says a Williams candidacy would trump any other Republican considering a run. Though Thayer offered no comment, he did not deny that he would accept an invitation to join Williams on the ticket if it is offered.
