The campaign of Democrat Jack Conway says internal polling shows the Attorney General either tied or leading Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo by as much as ten points in the U.S. Senate primary battle in Kentucky.

That's a large swing from the 11 point lead Mongiardo enjoys in the WHAS11/Survey USA poll released Tuesday evening.

"This Survey USA poll is significantly out of line with two recent internal polls showing Jack Conway is in a very strong position with Democratic primary voters,"  said Conway spokesman Mark Riddle.

But, rival Daniel Mongiardo's campaign was quick to agree with the poll.  In a statement attributed to Mongiardo, he says he is "very gratified" by the poll.

"I  believe my determination to travel to every corner of our Commonwealth and meet with voters to talk about the issues they care most about is reflected in tonight’s numbers,"  Mongiardo said in the statement.

Meanwhile, the campaign of Republican Rand Paul said it was not surprised by his nine point surge since the last WHAS11 poll 11 weeks ago, while indicating there is still much work to do increasing Paul's name recognition.

Paul has never before run for political office.

"Rand's credibility on the the issues is very solid and his campaign will only get stronger as he becomes better known," said campaign manager David Adams.

The campaign manager of Republican Trey Grayson was stoic in the face of Paul's mounting challenge.

"Poll numbers bounce around, but the one thing these polls have consistently shown is that Trey Grayson is the strongest candidate to hold Jim Bunning’s seat in conservative hands next November.

Election Day is the only poll that matters, and that’s the one we’re working towards," said Nate Hodson.

Here are the responses to the WHAS11/Survey USA poll from the four major U.S. Senate campaigns in Kentucky:

Rand Paul:

"Well, of course we are pleased. But no one close to the Rand Paul campaign can really be surprised. Kentuckians know we can't just lie down by and let our government steamroll over us and that's why we are supporting Rand Paul in greater numbers. Rand's credibility on the the issues is very solid and his campaign will only get stronger as he becomes better known. Now is the time to fight back harder than ever to restore America to our God-given greatness and that's why Rand Paul's platform of balanced federal budgets and freedom, capitalism, and real job creation is catching on."

Statement on Survey USA numbers

Jack Conway is the Only Democrat that can Win Back Wendell Ford's Senate Seat

"There will be many polls throughout this campaign.  We know that at the end of the day, voters will be looking for the candidate that has real results, a record of integrity, that will hold Congress accountable and will focus on creating jobs and opportunity for all Kentuckians - that candidate is Jack Conway.  This poll, along with other independent polling, shows that Jack Conway is the only Democrat that can win back Wendell Ford's Senate seat.

The Survey USA polls reveals what other independent polls consistently show - that Jack Conway beats Rand Paul by 5 points (44 to 39) while Mongiardo ties with Paul and Mongiardo trails Trey Grayson by 10 points (48 to 38).

The September 30 Rasmussen poll showed Conway ahead of Paul by 4 points and tied with Grayson while Grayson beats Mongiardo by 7 points and Paul beats Mongiardo by 5.

With regards to the Democratic Primary match-up, this Survey USA poll is significantly out of line with two recent internal polls showing Jack Conway is in a very strong position with Democratic primary voters."

Trey Grayson:

"Poll numbers bounce around, but the one thing these polls have consistently shown is that Trey Grayson is the strongest candidate to hold Jim Bunning’s seat in conservative hands next November.  Election Day is the only poll that matters, and that’s the one we’re working towards."

Daniel Mongiardo:

Mongiardo Leads Conway By Double Digits

Lt. Governor and Democratic U.S. Senate Daniel Mongiardo widened his lead to double digits over his primary opponent Attorney General Jack Conway according to a WHAS 11 / Survey USA Poll released earlier this evening.

In response to the survey findings, Mongiardo released the following statement:

“I and our campaign supporters are very gratified by the latest WHAS 11 / Survey USA poll results. These numbers reaffirm my belief that this campaign is about the families of Kentucky who are struggling to survive economically during the worst recession in our life time, trying to save their home, pay the bills and keep their health care while still providing an opportunity for their children to have a better life.  They desperately want a United States Senator who will go to Washington and fight for them.  I will never lose sight of that fact – now or when I am serving them in the United States Senate.”

I  believe my determination to travel to every corner of our Commonwealth and meet with voters to talk about the issues they care most about is reflected in tonight’s numbers. I will continue traveling to our urban centers and our rural communities to engage voters and discuss the real issues at hand because I believe that best serves our Party and the people of Kentucky who want a Senator who finally puts Kentucky’s working families first.

“Ultimately, the only poll that counts is the one taken on Election Day. I encourage our supporters to enjoy this moment and tonight’s results,; but tomorrow, our campaign to bring affordable, quality  health care to every American, to offer real solutions that will help build a stronger economy here in Kentucky and to promote Kentucky energy and protect Kentucky values resumes anew.
