LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Senator Rand Paul met with the Coalition of African American Pastors in Memphis, Tenn.

Paul is trying to build support for a 2016 presidential run and said he's willing to work to get the African-American vote.

“But I want to take issues that I believe in strongly, that I think will resonate strongly in the African-American community and say, 'I want your vote. And I want to compete for that vote.' And I think it's good for both sides. Not only for the Republican Party, I think it's good for the African-American community to say to both parties, you have to come get my vote, we're not a guaranteed vote for the Democrats anymore,” Paul said.

Paul said one of the topics of Friday's discussion was the war on drugs in the African-American community.

Paul was the keynote speaker at the Republican National Committee's spring meeting.
