FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Secretary of State Elaine Walker has recovered from a lumpectomy to remove a malignant breast tumor and now is preparing to undergo radiation treatments.
The 60-year-old Bowling Green resident said Thursday that because of early detection the cancer hadn't spread to her lymph nodes.
Walker said she'll find out next week if chemotherapy will be necessary. She said early indications suggest it won't be.
Walker has been talking publicly about her disease to encourage all women to get routine mammograms and to perform self-exams to catch the disease early.
Walker has about 2 months remaining in her term. She said she plans to maintain a regular work schedule.
