The unlikely U.S. Senate candidacy of liberal Bloomington cafe owner Tamyra D’Ippolito is getting an even unlikelier boost from Republicans across Indiana and across the country.
Conservative bloggers are rallying for D'Ippolito's signature drive. She needs 4,500 signatures on her filing petition, 500 from each of Indiana's nine congressional districts. If she succeeds, D'Ippolito would be the only Democrat on the primary ballot in the Senate race, but would probably face a write-in challenge from an establishment candidate.
If D'Ippolito fails, the Democratic Party's state central committee would choose the nominee.
D'Ippolito is updating her efforts on her facebook page, and presumably will be working overnight to meet the noon deadline. Her updates indicate that she is most short of signatures in the 8th congressional district, coincidentally U.S. Rep Brad Ellsworth's district. He has indicated that he may be interested in the race.
