(WHAS11) - Charter school activist Phil Moffett speaks to WHAS11's Joe Arnold and announces his candidacy for governor.
"I'm really tired about Kentucky being 40th or 30th in just about everything we do," Moffett explained in his announcement on WHAS11.com, "And it's time to put some common sense solutions in play to make this a better place for all of our citizens."
Moffett has been active in Tea Party events and his campaign is being managed by former Rand Paul U.S. Senate campaign manager and chairman David Adams.
"Tea Parties are not a monolithic organization," Moffett continued, "and I'm going to have to appeal to everyone of those groups across the state and I intend to do that."
The Republican Louisville businessman says he has run a small business for years and has launched scholarship programs. He says after a search and discussions with several potential Lt. Governor candidates, Rep. Mike Harman (R-Danville) will join him on the ticket.
"It took a while to find somebody. I thought of it a lot like dating. I want a good realtionship. I want to be able to work with this person very strongly after a few days it was very clear that Mike was the best choice."
While Moffett expects a "very competitive race," he declined to talk about Senate President David Williams potential candidacy until Williams formally enters the race.
Moffett wants to eliminate all taxes in Kentucky other than the single rate consumer sales tax, that he wants to expand to all goods and services.
"That will make us the most competitive state in the area if not the country."
"We have a situation in Kentucky where companies are leaving California and New Jersey and New York but they are not looking at Kentucky because of our business environment. I want to change our tax structure so they look at us first."
