The timing of the announcement of political endorsements could be based on a number of factors: when the endorsement is secured, to keep a candidate's name in the headlines, to turn the page during a negative press cycle, to amplify fundraising -- among others.
No doubt, the U.S. Senate candidates in Kentucky already know a number of endorsements they have secured but will strategically announce them to maximize the political benefit.
Among the latest endorsements announced by the campaigns, former Kentucky Governor and current State Senator Julian Carroll says he is backing Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo in the Democratic primary:
"Six years ago, when no one else would, Daniel Mongiardo had the courage to stand up to the failed economic policies of Jim Bunning and George Bush." Julian Carroll (full news release below)
The Democratic frontrunners include lists of their endorsements on their respective websites:
Meanwhile, magazine publisher and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes says he is backing Rand Paul in Kentucky's Republican U.S. Senate primary:
“As someone who has run an outsider campaign myself, I know something about taking on the establishment. I see in Rand someone who can take the fight from the Tea Parties to the Senate, and help take back our government and our country from the out of control, tax and spend liberals." Former KY Governor Julian Carroll
Endorses Mongiardo for U.S. Senate
FRANKFORT - Former Kentucky Governor and current State Senator Julian Carroll formally endorsed Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo for U.S. Senate in the Democratic Primary today.
Carroll said, "I am proud to endorse Daniel Mongiardo for the United States Senate. Six years ago, when no one else would, Daniel Mongiardo had the courage to stand up to the failed economic policies of Jim Bunning and George Bush. Daniel is an independent Democrat with the personal fortitude and strength of character to stand up and fight for Kentucky's working families and their jobs, even if it means opposing our party's political establishment in Washington. I believe it is that kind of independent leadership that Kentucky families of all political stripes are looking for - a candidate who will always put Kentucky first. That's Daniel Mongiardo."
Combined with Governor Steve Beshear's previous endorsement, Mongiardo now has the public support of two Kentucky Governors.
Mongiardo said, "One of the many things I most admire about Governor Carroll is the fact that though he has served the people of our Commonwealth at the highest levels of government for more than 40 years, he has never strayed from his western Kentucky values or lost touch with the working men and women of our Commonwealth. Throughout his public life, Governor Carroll has fought for the men and women who toil everyday to pay the bills, provide for their children and save a little something for when they retire. Governor Carroll has never forgotten them and neither will I."
Carroll served as Governor from 1974 to 1979 and currently serves in the Kentucky State Senate, representing Franklin, Woodford, Anderson and Fayette counties.
Steve Forbes Endorses Rand Paul for Senate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 7th, 2009
BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY – Conservative icon, journalist and financial expert Steve Forbes has endorsed Rand Paul in his race for United Senate.
Said Mr. Forbes, “I am proud to endorse Republican candidate Dr. Rand Paul for Senate.
“As someone who has run an outsider campaign myself, I know something about taking on the establishment. I see in Rand someone who can take the fight from the Tea Parties to the Senate, and help take back our government and our country from the out of control, tax and spend liberals.
“The American people need more than just another vote. They need a man of principle who will always stand up and fight. They need a citizen politician who will represent THEM.
“Rand Paul will do the work to fight for lower taxes and spending and for more freedom in Washington. He’ll fight for a constitutional amendment to balance the budget and for term limits. He’ll fight to give back more of our rights, not take more away.
And then he’ll go back home to Kentucky. I can’t think of a better way to represent the people of Kentucky then to end the cycle of career politicians and pork barrel spending in Washington.”
Steve Forbes endorsement is another major success in along list of achievements for the Paul campaign. Recent poll show Rand leading his primary opponent by a commanding 19 points. Rand Paul has raised over $1.75 million dollars, including over $650,000 in the fourth quarter of 2009. Dr. Paul plans an active and robust campaign in 2010 to continue to build support and win the primary this spring.
