LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Saturday that the choice of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) as Gov. Mitt Romney's GOP running mate is an "excellent choice"  which shows that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is serious about tackling problems ignored by President Barack Obama.

Romney briefed McConnell Saturday morning, prior to introducing Ryan as his Vice-Presidential choice in a Norfolk, Virginia campaign event.

"Gov. Romney showed today that he is determined to confront a host of growing crises that President Obama has ignored," McConnell said in a statement.  "Where the current President has simply refused to act, Gov. Romney has now pledged to lead. Paul Ryan is an excellent choice, and a confirmation that Gov. Romney is serious about strengthening America’s economic future, tackling the deficits and debt that have skyrocketed under President Obama, and returning to a path to solvency and security."

McConnell said the Romney-Ryan team will be "ready on day one."

U.S. Rep Brett Guthrie (R-KY) said he is "excited"  that his fellow Republican Congressman is on the ticket.

"As the Republican nominee for Vice-President, he will continue to champion his message of fiscal responsibility," Guthrie said in a statement.  "Paul is a man of character and has what it takes to make a difference for our nation’s future. I am proud to support the Romney-Ryan ticket because these two great leaders will not duck the serious issues facing our country, but rather face them head on in our mission to restore fiscal sanity in Washington D.C.”

Another GOP congressional colleague, Indiana gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence, called Ryan a "good and decent man."

"I have known and worked with Paul Ryan for the past twelve years and count him as a personal friend," Pence said in a statement.  "Paul has the character, intellect and optimistic vision our next president will need at his side to turn this economy around and put Hoosiers back to work."

"Paul Ryan also possesses an understanding of the federal budget that our next administration will need to restore fiscal solvency and save future generations of Americans from massive deficits and debt," Pence said.

McCONNELL STATEMENT ON PAUL RYAN

'Gov. Romney showed today that he is determined to confront a host of growing crises that President Obama has ignored. Where the current President has simply refused to act, Gov. Romney has now pledged to lead. Paul Ryan is an excellent choice.'

For immediate release  August 11, 2012

LOUISVILLE – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Saturday regarding the announcement of House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan as the running mate for Gov. Mitt Romney, and Gov. Romney’s determination to confront the growing crises that have grown under President Obama’s lack of leadership on the economy:

"Gov. Romney showed today that he is determined to confront a host of growing crises that President Obama has ignored. Where the current President has simply refused to act, Gov. Romney has now pledged to lead. Paul Ryan is an excellent choice, and a confirmation that Gov. Romney is serious about strengthening America’s economic future, tackling the deficits and debt that have skyrocketed under President Obama, and returning to a path to solvency and security.

"Americans are looking for leadership that has been lacking on the most critical issues facing our country’s economic future. The Romney-Ryan team can return much-needed leadership from day one and help bring real recovery to our economy, reverse the damage of the Obama economy, and take a serious approach to the Obama debt and focus on growing jobs—not the size of the government.

“President Obama’s term has been marked by overwhelming national debt, a first-ever downgrade of America’s credit rating, high unemployment and a disappointing lack of leadership when it comes to addressing spending. It’s time to change that, and Gov. Romney and Chairman Ryan will be ready on day one to give America the leadership it deserves.”

Statement of Congressman Brett Guthrie on Selection of Paul Ryan as Republican Vice Presidential Candidate

“I am excited that my colleague Paul Ryan is now part of America’s comeback team. As the Republican nominee for Vice-President, he will continue to champion his message of fiscal responsibility.  Paul is a man of character and has what it takes to make a difference for our nation’s future. I am proud to support the Romney-Ryan ticket because these two great leaders will not duck the serious issues facing our country, but rather face them head on in our mission to restore fiscal sanity in Washington D.C.”

Carmel, IN - Today, Republican nominee for governor of Indiana Mike Pence released the following statement on the selection of Paul Ryan as vice presidential running mate.

"Paul Ryan is an excellent choice to serve as Vice President of the United States, and I commend Mitt Romney for choosing this good and decent man as his running mate. I have known and worked with Paul Ryan for the past twelve years and count him as a personal friend. Paul has the character, intellect and optimistic vision our next president will need at his side to turn this economy around and put Hoosiers back to work. Paul Ryan also possesses an understanding of the federal budget that our next administration will need to restore fiscal solvency and save future generations of Americans from massive deficits and debt. Karen and I congratulate Paul, Janna and their family on this honor, and I thank them for their willingness to step forward to be a part of America's Comeback Team."
