(WHAS11) -- The following are a list of statements released Saturday following Governor Mitt Romney's selection of Congressman Paul Ryan (R) as his vice presidential nominee:

Sixth District congressional candidate Andy Barr:

"By selecting Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate, Mitt Romney has shown his commitment to finding real solutions to our nation's jobs and debt crises.  Congressman Ryan is a man of principle, substance and big ideas.  He is a creative thinker who has demonstrated both political courage and bipartisanship in tackling one of the great challenges of our time: how to keep America's commitment to our seniors while saving Medicare for future generations.  I look forward to working with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to avert a national debt crisis, save Medicare from bankruptcy and restore prosperity, economic growth and jobs for the American people."

U.S. Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.):

"One of the most important decisions a presidential candidate can make is choosing the right running mate. Governor Romney's decision to add Paul Ryan to the ticket focuses this election on two different visions for America. The Romney-Ryan ticket demonstrates a commitment to offer bold solutions to some of our nation's greatest challenges, including the critical need to reform entitlement programs. Paul Ryan is a proven leader willing to make the tough decisions, offer sound solutions and put the country ahead of politics to restore our economy for future generations."

Congressman Brett Guthrie:

"I am excited that my colleague Paul Ryan is now part of America's comeback team. As the Republican nominee for Vice-President, he will continue to champion his message of fiscal responsibility. Paul is a man of character and has what it takes to make a difference for our nation's future. I am proud to support the Romney-Ryan ticket because these two great leaders will not duck the serious issues facing our country, but rather face them head on in our mission to restore fiscal sanity in Washington D.C."

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell:

"Gov. Romney showed today that he is determined to confront a host of growing crises that President Obama has ignored. Where the current President has simply refused to act, Gov. Romney has now pledged to lead. Paul Ryan is an excellent choice, and a confirmation that Gov. Romney is serious about strengthening America's economic future, tackling the deficits and debt that have skyrocketed under President Obama, and returning to a path to solvency and security.  Americans are looking for leadership that has been lacking on the most critical issues facing our country's economic future. The Romney-Ryan team can return much-needed leadership from day one and help bring real recovery to our economy, reverse the damage of the Obama economy, and take a serious approach to the Obama debt and focus on growing jobs-not the size of the government.  President Obama's term has been marked by overwhelming national debt, a first-ever downgrade of America's credit rating, high unemployment and a disappointing lack of leadership when it comes to addressing spending. It's time to change that, and Gov. Romney and Chairman Ryan will be ready on day one to give America the leadership it deserves."

Republican nominee for governor of Indiana Mike Pence:

"Paul Ryan is an excellent choice to serve as Vice President of the United States, and I commend Mitt Romney for choosing this good and decent man as his running mate. I have known and worked with Paul Ryan for the past twelve years and count him as a personal friend. Paul has the character, intellect and optimistic vision our next president will need at his side to turn this economy around and put Hoosiers back to work. Paul Ryan also possesses an understanding of the federal budget that our next administration will need to restore fiscal solvency and save future generations of Americans from massive deficits and debt. Karen and I congratulate Paul, Janna and their family on this honor, and I thank them for their willingness to step forward to be a part of America's Comeback Team."

The Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and RNC Co-Chair Sharon Day:

"My friend and fellow Wisconsinite Paul Ryan will serve America admirably as the next Vice President of the United States. Today, Americans are starving for leaders who can fix our economy and get our spending under control. Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan have the knowledge, expertise and vision we need to get America working again and get our fiscal house in order. Across the country, Americans are hurting, but America's Comeback Team will offer us a new direction and a brighter future. I congratulate Governor Romney on his excellent decision. This is a great day for Wisconsin and for America," said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

"I share the Chairman's enthusiasm for Congressman Paul Ryan. The Romney-Ryan ticket will help get America working again," said RNC Co-Chair Sharon Day.

Congressman Marlin Stutzman:

"I couldn't be more excited about Governor Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee. Having worked closely with Chairman Ryan, I have seen him put together a plan to solve our overspending, budget crisis while saving Social Security and Medicare. This shows that as President, Romney wants to tackle big issues in leading America's comeback."  Stutzman added, "Having travelled with Paul Ryan to Afghanistan to visit with our brave men and women fighting for our freedom, I learned that like most of us in northeastern Indiana, he is a man of faith who who supports our military, cares deeply about his family and is incredibly concerned about the condition of the nation we leave our children."

Shelli Yoder, the 9th District Democratic congressional candidate:

"Selecting Paul Ryan as the Republican vice-presidential nominee brings Indiana's 9th District congressional race into the forefront. The strong commitment of Ryan's supporters, including Todd Young, to end Medicare, the most efficiently operated health insurance in the country, and to replace it with a coupon program, is now on the table in the 9th District. Young, a faithful soldier of Mr. Ryan's on the House Budget Committee and on the House floor, twice voted for Ryan's plan to phase out Medicare. With Ryan as vice president, Young would be a reliable rubber-stamp vote to privatize Medicare and further undermine middle-class retirees.  Under the Ryan/Young plan, Medicare would be replaced with a voucher system that gives insurance companies, not you and your doctor, final say over whether to pay for certain medical care, regardless of medical necessity. It would substantially increase the health care costs to seniors by thousands of dollars every year. The Ryan/Young plan would devastate 9th District seniors, ending the Medicare guarantee and shifting health-care costs to those who can often least afford them. The Ryan/Young plan is not reform - it is rationing.  Beyond ending the guarantee of Medicare, the Ryan/Young plan hurts middle-class families in many other ways. For example, the plan encourages companies to ship jobs overseas instead of creating them here at home. It also hands more tax breaks to millionaires while cutting educational opportunities for students. Is this what we want? This Ryan/Young budget is the wrong approach to put our citizens back to work and to care for our seniors.  The choice for Congress in Indiana's 9th District could not be more clear. It's a choice between a fighter and a voice for working and middle-class Hoosier families versus a partisan ideologue who will gamble on a radical budget plan that cripples the economic security of 9th District middle-class families and senior citizens."

Rep. Todd Young (R-IN9):

"At a time when unemployment remains above 8%, our national debt nears $16 trillion, and political debate threatens to stall recovery, America needs leaders willing to put pen to paper and outline a clear path forward for our country.  Paul Ryan--with whom I've worked on the Budget Committee to draft such a bold, comprehensive and coherent vision for America's future--is exactly that sort of leader.  At a time when the Presidential campaign seems headed for the politics of personal destruction, this addition to the Republican ticket should help refocus the race on the important issues that all Americans must collectively address.  I can say first hand that Mitt Romney has chosen a running mate who is brilliant, thoughtful and articulate when it comes to the greatest challenges facing our country. This is a choice that is sure to energize those voters who want to see a plan of action--not merely empty rhetoric or hollow speeches--to get our private sector economy rolling again.  Criticizing the other guy's plan can never substitute for having a plan of your own, and the selection of Paul Ryan shows that Mitt Romney is serious about charting a course to prosperity."

Lisa Stickan, Chairman of the Young Republican National Federation:

"This morning, Mitt Romney selected Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan to be his running mate and Vice Presidential nominee of our party. Rep. Ryan is a proven reformer and leader who has courageously offered concrete proposals to turn our economy around. He is also a young leader, only 42 years old, who understands the generational challenges being faced by our country and has made choices to ensure that our generation and our children's generation have a future that is not buried in debt. This is in stark contrast to President Obama's record of failure, piling on more debt and more job and business killing regulations that ignore the challenges of our generation while undermining our own hope on our future. Governor Romney's selection of Paul Ryan shows vision and a seriousness about our future that the American people will recognize this fall."
