Brackets: Ky leaders, Obama predict Cards in Final Four

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- President Barack Obama's prediction that the University of Louisville Cardinals will return to the Final Four a third straight year is shared by all but one local elected leader surveyed by WHAS11.

On ESPN, the President predicts Louisville will fall to Michigan State in the NCAA Championship.

All but one of the Kentucky politicians who supplied WHAS11 with a bracket also predict the Cardinals will make it to the national championship against top-seeded Florida.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer (D) tweeted, "the Cards will Chomp the Gators in Texas."

Attorney General Jack Conway (D) has Louisville over Florida 69-67.

Metro Council President Jim King (D) predicts a 7 point Cardinal win over the Gators.

And Congressman John Yarmuth (D) writes "Go Cards!" on the championship line of his bracket, projecting an 84-81 victory over Florida.

Though Kentucky Auditor Adam Edelen (D) and Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) also predict Louisville will play Florida in the championship, both have the Gators winning the crown.

Perhaps even more politically sensitive statewide is the fate of the University of Kentucky in the politicians' brackets.

Edelen includes an asterisk on his bracket to explain it was "head not heart" that picked the Cards over the Cats.

Grimes avoids that nightmare match-up altogether -- she has the Cats losing in the second round to Wichita State.

Agriculture Commissioner James Comer (R) is the only elected leader we surveyed who has the Wildcats defeating the Cardinals in the Sweet 16.  He then predicts Kentucky will become just the second eight seed in tournament history to win the title, over Michigan State.

The President also has Michigan State in the championship game -- defeating Louisville.

"It's been a while since I've won my pool," Obama told ESPN's Andy Katz.

And Yarmuth says it will be a while longer.

"I look forward to proving the President wrong again this year," Yarmuth posted on Twitter, Wednesday.

Late Wednesday, former U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Cathy Bailey, who is considering a campaign for Kentucky governor in 2015, provided WHAS11 with a copy of her NCAA Bracket. Bailey's bracket has Kentucky and 15 seed Eastern Kentucky meeting in the national championship game. "With Kentucky taking it in '12 and Louisville in '13 - I went with Kentucky for 2014," Bailey said. "And I'm pulling for Louisville taking it in '15. Maybe a lucky year in 2015 since the University of Louisville is in my home county." "I can assure you I'm going to be watching all of this from the center court of my home and love every minute of it," Bailey added. "Fasten your seat belt fans - here we go!" WHAS11 also solicited brackets from Gov. Steve Beshear (D), Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson (D), U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell (R), Rand Paul (R), Dan Coats (R) and Joe Donnelly (D), Congressmen Brett Guthrie (R), Thomas Massie (R) and Todd Young (R), gubernatorial candidate Hal Heiner (R), potential candidate Crit Luallen,  House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D) and Senate President Robert Stivers.

This story will be updated when WHAS11 receives any additional brackets.
