FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- A Senate committee has approved legislation that could lead to the phasing out of basic landline service in Kentucky in yet another step of telephone deregulation.

Telephone companies have been pressing lawmakers to lift a regulation to provide the cheapest landline service in areas where other options are available.

The Senate Economic Development, Tourism and Labor Committee voted 9-1 on Tuesday to pass the bill sponsored by Republican state Sen. Paul Hornback of Shelbyville.

Opponents claim the legislation would be especially harmful for the poor in Kentucky's rural areas who use basic phone service.

The measure now goes to the full Senate for consideration.

The legislation is Senate Bill 12.
