LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Kentucky's Attorney General Jack Conway has a warning for state leaders over hemp.

Conway sent a letter to Governor Steve Beshear, Attorney General Commissioner James Comer and others warning industrial hemp farming remains illegal in the Commonwealth.

The letter deflates hopes of those who want to farm hemp and wanted to begin planting next year.

Kentucky lawmakers have passed legislation to allow farmers to grow the crop but that's only if the federal government lifts a longstanding ban on it.

“I hope that hemp farmers that want a federal waiver from the DEA get their waiver. I would like to see that happen but it is my responsibility to make sure that farmers that are being told that they can plant as early as next spring understand that they may be subject to criminal liability or financial exposure  and their resources will be confiscated if they're found to be growing illegal hemp,” Jack Conway said.

Comer responded, saying he's disappointed Conway is playing politics with the issue and that we should be doing everything we can to create new sources of revenue for Kentucky farmers and new jobs for Kentuckians.
