(WHAS11 Political Blog) -- Left behind when Illinois first granted casino licenses, the state's horse racing tracks are pushing for a share of the jackpot.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that racetracks, such as Fairmount Park near St. Louis, argue that casino gambling would rescue Illinois' horse racing industry and raise money for the state.  (Sound familiar, Kentucky?).

Fairmount's average purse right now is about $5,000, which is split among all the horse teams in a given race, from about 60 percent for the winner to 1 percent for the also-rans. Fairmount's closest competing tracks in Iowa and Indiana both have slots on premises, allowing both to offer average purses of around $15,000 per race.
