Democrat challengers for Jim Bunning's U.S. Senate seat are weighing in on Tuesday's Public Policy Polling survey of likely primary voters, which - as the Dan Mongiardo campaign points out - is "widely different" than the WHAS11/Survey USA poll from early November.
Jack Conway's campaign proclaims their 37-33 edge over Mongiardo in the PPP poll (a statistical dead heat) as an "early Christmas present" which "brings new energy to our campaign."
But Mongiardo's campaign says the poll was taken during a snowstorm power outage in eastern Kentucky. They not only question the results of the Democrats' poll, but the also the Republican primary poll results:
"For those who want to believe this poll, Merry Christmas! But to believe this poll, you need to believe Rand Paul is beating Trey Grayson by almost 3-1 in Grayson's homebase; that Mongiardo's lead in Eastern Kentucky has gone from 49 pts to 11 pts in six weeks; and that Mongiardo, who was beating Conway by 27 pts. in Western Kentucky is now just even."

Public Policy Poll Widely Different Than Survey USA
Poll Taken During Winter Storm Raises Questions
Frankfort- The U.S. Senate Campaign of Daniel Mongiardo issued the following statement on the Public Policy Poll released today which showed Mongiardo in a statistical tie with Attorney General Jack Conway:
Said Kim Geveden, Mongiardo spokesman:
"This poll, taken during a winter storm which knocked out electricity for 80,000 Eastern Kentuckians in Daniel Mongiardo's homebase, shows Mongiardo and Conway tied. However, it is vastly different than the Survey USA poll of just six weeks ago, which showed Mongiardo ahead of Conway by 11 pts and Grayson and Paul tied."
"For those who want to believe this poll, Merry Christmas! But to believe this poll, you need to believe Rand Paul is beating Trey Grayson by almost 3-1 in Grayson's homebase; that Mongiardo's lead in Eastern Kentucky has gone from 49 pts to 11 pts in six weeks; and that Mongiardo, who was beating Conway by 27 pts. in Western Kentucky is now just even."What the working families of Kentucky struggling in this tough economy can believe is that Daniel Mongiardo will fight in the U.S. Senate for jobs, affordable healthcare, and a better life for them and their children."
Jack Conway news release:
The recently released independent Public Policy Poll confirmed our internal polls and what we’ve known for months: The momentum continues to build for our campaign and we are the Democratic candidate best positioned to take back Wendell Ford's Senate seat in November 2010. This race is not about name calling or silliness others may throw at us. It should instead focus on jobs for those who need work and opportunity for those who want a better future.
The poll showed that I am leading my opponent 37-33 percent, garnering more support among nearly every demographic group. Voters between ages 18-29 prefer our campaign by 56 percent while those over 65-years-old favor us 42-29 percent. Voters identifying themselves as liberal support my campaign 50-28 and self-identified conservatives support our campaign 40-23 percent.
Please help us continue to build on this momentum by making a contribution to my campaign today at www.jackconway.org!
Although this campaign has already lasted nearly nine months, the most critical months are still ahead. With a strong 4th Quarter FEC report, which ends December 31, we will bring this momentum into 2010!
This early Christmas present brings new energy to our campaign. With your generosity we will bring a new generation of leadership to Washington!
