Though the Jack Conway Senate campaign is disavowing any connection to automated campaign calls critical of opponent Daniel Mongiardo, Mongiardo suggests that Conway is behind them and called for the rival candidate to denounce them.

Mongiardo defended himself in Louisville Sunday against two "Robo calls" that claim he supports cap and trade.  He said the voice on those Robo calls is not his.

“I have always said that cap and trade is bad.  It is bad for this state.  It is bad for communities across this state.  It is nothing more than a tax on Kentucky coal,” said Mongiardo.

"They absolutely are not ours,"  said Conway campaign spokeswoman Allison Haley.

Wednesday’s WHAS11/Courier Journal poll showed a statistical dead heat in the heated Democratic primary, with Mongiardo ahead of Conway, 38% to 37%.

Mongiardo news release:

Conway Launches Automated Phone Calls Which Doctors Mongiardo’s Voice to Falsely Accuse Mongiardo of Supporting Cap and Trade
Mongiardo Spokesman Says “For Attorney General Conway to doctor Daniel Mongiardo’s voice to falsely accuse him of supporting cap and trade is not only illegal, but shows Conway is desperate to cover up his support of cap and trade.”

FRANKFORT----In a last minute effort to cover up his support for cap and trade, Attorney General Jack Conway has launched thousands of illegal automated phone calls which doctors Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Dr. Daniel Mongiardo’s voice to falsely accuse Mongiardo of supporting cap and trade.

The calls to thousands of Eastern and Western Kentucky voters began last night.

Conway’s automated call says, “Please listen to this breaking news.  Daniel Mongiardo has sold out … to 'liberal environmentalists' and calls 'cap and trade a good idea.'"  The call then plays a voice saying “Cap & Trade (inaudible) is a good idea.”  The male caller, speaking in a thick mountain accent, then comes back on the line and tells the voter, “That was Daniel Mongiardo in his own words.”  The voice on the tape calling Cap and Trade “a good idea” is clearly not Mongiardo’s.

Mongiardo has been endorsed by United Mine Workers for his strong support of Kentucky coal and his strong and consistent opposition to cap and trade.

“For Attorney General Conway to doctor Daniel Mongiardo’s voice to falsely accuse him of supporting cap and trade is not only illegal, but shows Conway is desperate to cover up his own support of cap and trade. Not only has Jack Conway supported cap and trade, but he’s invested millions in a Texas natural gas company which opposes developing clean Kentucky coal,” said Mongiardo spokesman Kim Geveden.

“The United Mine Workers have endorsed Daniel Mongiardo, not Jack Conway because they know Daniel Mongiardo is the one candidate to support Kentucky coal and oppose cap and trade,” said Geveden.

“Jack Conway must think Kentucky voters are stupid to believe his doctored phone call attacking Daniel Mongiardo. Jack Conway needs to answer why he would launch these illegal calls which doctor Daniel Mongiardo’s voice,” said Geveden.
