LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- The first television commercial of the recently formed Kentucky Opportunity Coalition praises U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky) opposition to "Obamacare," just as Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear (D) expands Medicaid in Kentucky under terms of the Affordable Care Act.
The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition (KOC) is spending more than $100,000 to broadcast the commercial for one week in Louisville and Lexington. The 501(c)4 non-profit corporation's stated mission is to educate citizens about issues affecting Kentuckians. By law, it cannot advocate for a candidate's election, but can advise voters to show their support in other ways, such as calling a politician's office.
The KOC is not connected to McConnell's campaign.
“This health care law is a disaster and Senator Mitch McConnell has been a steadfast leader in opposing Obamacare,” said the coalition’s senior advisor Scott Jennings. “He warned about the problems that would flow from this law and we see them coming to pass, so much so that Senator Max Baucus, the Democrat who wrote the legislation, now calls it a ‘train wreck.’”
"McConnell stood up for Kentuckians in opposing Obamacare and we are encouraging people to call his office and tell him to keep up the fight against it,” Jennings continued.
Note: The original post of this story erroneously referred to the KOC as a "Super PAC."
