(WHAS11) -- Two more Derby contenders went on the shelf today with leg injuries and for the second day in a row, a prominent son of Bernardini was hurt.
Consortium, who was being pointed to the Gotham Stakes in New York, has a chip in his right front ankle and is headed for surgery.
Consortium jumped into the Derby picture when he finished second to Algorithms in a Gulfstream allowance race but now both Bernardini colts are injured.
Bernardini offspring are quickly getting a reputation as "fast but fragile." Consortium's stablemate Alpha is another Bernardini with a shot at the Derby and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin says he's dong fine in Florida and will run in the Wood Memorial or Florida Derby.
Meanwhile reports out of Oaklawn Park say that Junebugred, the winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes is out with an ankle chip.
Junebugred, who was named after a fishing lure, was one of the early feel good stories at Oaklawn. But trainer Steve Hobby found filling in the colt's ankle yesterday and that means at least 90 days on the sidelines.
