LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- If you are 55 and older you could be the perfect person to get involved in a Big Brothers Big Sisters match with a young person. New research by the organization shows that those matches, older and younger, last three times longer.

The Humana foundation in Louisville is giving the local chapter $170,000 to start recruiting more volunteer mentors in the senior group. But young adults are also a big factor, as we found on the ice in downtown Louisville.

For Lafonda Adams, 11, and new big sister Ashley Engstrom skating at 4th Street Live is really fun. Ashley works for Big Brothers Big Sisters. She actually helps others get matched. When her co-workers found Lafonda for Ashley, the match process paid off.

Big brothers big sisters covers 12 counties in Kentucky and southern Indiana. The money you give, and the money Humana just donated, helps pay the support staff and pay for the exhaustive background checks before you can volunteer.

You can call 1-877-588-2300 to get started as a mentor.
