LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Karen Stark, special education teacher, who parents say is critical to the success of their children was honored today with the ExCel Award at Westport Middle School.

Stark actually began her teaching career as a volunteer worker at Wesport Middle when her children were students at the school. After they moved on to high school, Karen decided to re-enter the work force and went back to college for a master's degree.

She is now one of four special education teaches at Westport. She teaches ten special needs children with the help of two assistants. There is also a student teacher in the classroom as Karen takes a leadership role in mentoring teachers of the future.

Parent Emlyn Riggle says Ms. Stark sees each students potential and works hard to lovingly encourage them to do more than they might ever think they could do.

Principal Staci Eddleman nominated Stark for the ExCel, calling her an amazing teacher. she says Karen is effective in helping students with communication skills and preparing them for high school.

Stark's family and her students attended the Excel presentation which also featured the Middle School Orchestra. As an ExCel winner, she also receives a $1000 dollar teacher grant from the sponsor LG and E KU.

The next Excel Award will be next Tuesday at the Academy at Shawnee.
