LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Organizers with the Kentucky Derby Festival announced Monday the theme for 2012 Thunder Over Louisville, which is April 21. “A Star Spangled Blast” is the theme that will honor men and women of the U.S. military. Organizers are coordinating a red, white and blue out and are expecting about 700,000 to attend the festivities.
The Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO Mike Berry was quick to mention at a press conference Monday the economic impact review in Louisville they conducted, stating Thunder Over Louisville can generate $56.5 million in Louisville on that one single day. But, he was hesitant to say the $1 million per day production cost, which includes an air show and fire works for the main entertainment.
This year’s thundernator will be Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dekota Meyer.
"I'll tell you it's a great honor,” Meyer said. “I used to watch it as a kid. To be the one pushing the button, really exciting being here to do it. It's really a spectacular event."
