(WHAS11) – Officials are urging the public to take proper precautions around water as Memorial Day kicks off the summer boating and swimming season.
During the summer of 2011, more than a dozen people drowned in Kentuckiana including two people at Deam Lake in Clark County, Indiana.
Some parents we spoke with say they are taking extra precautions with their children this year due to the rash drowning of last year.
“I always tell him to keep his eyes on me,” says one Deam Lake visitor.
Rocky Brown with the Department of Natural Resources reminds people to know their limitations and to avoid deep water if they don’t feel confident in their swimming ability.
