(WHAS11) - For the second day in a row, the likely favorite in the Santa Anita Derby has been sidelined by an injury.
When Premier Pegasus scratched Thursday with a fractured leg, the favorite's role switched to Bob Baffert's Jaycito.
But today, Baffert said Jaycito probably won't run because of a nagging foot bruise.
A veterinarian told the trainer that the 3-year-old could still run, but Baffert said he's not comfortable with that.
Unlike Premier Pegasus, Jaycito could still make a race before the before the Kentucky Derby if the bruise gets better. The most likely choice would be the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on April 23. That would still be two weeks before the first Saturday in May.
Premier Pegasus and Jaycito ran one-two in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita and were thought to be the best Derby contenders on the West Coast.
Now it appears that Silver Medallion, trained by Steve Asmussen will be the morning line favorite, but considering the developments of the last two days, it's a role that no one would want.
