LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11 and sluggermuseum.org) -- The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory unveiled a bat used by one of the greatest hitters of all time in the Negro League.
“To find an authentic game used Negro League...bat is very rare but to find one from somebody with the status of Mule Suttles is unbelievable," Nathan Stalvey, Slugger Museum curator, said.
Mule Suttles was a Hall of Famer, a power hitter, played first base and in the outfield.
The bat is the first model made for Suttles and was used when he played for the Newark Eagles. The markings on the bat indicate the rare piece was returned to the factory in 1937 – a date that corresponds with factory archives.
The bat will be on display through March 31 to commemorate Black History Month.
