LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Portland Christian’s basketball team reached the KHSAA District 25 playoffs, and although they lost to Manual Tuesday night, getting there may have been the bigger victory.

Coach Joe Meredith survived a heart attack, as well as kidney and pancreatic cancer in the last few years and has coached the Eagles, whose motto is "Get Up," to play on the court the way they play in life.

That spirit was put on display in the season's last regular season game against the Fort Knox Eagles. Though Portland Christian was losing, Meredith called timeout with seven seconds left, knowing he had none remaining which invited a technical foul. He did so to allow Fort Knox's senior team manager, who is autistic, an attempt at free throws and the first points of his career on the school's senior night. The boy made both.

Opponents on the floor and teammates in life.
