(WHAS11) – Well known jockey and horse trainer Mitch Shirota was remembered at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Shirota died on Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was 78-years-old.
Shirota was a well recognized face on the backside and his career in the horse racing circuit spanned more than 30 years. He saddled 236 winners and he won 79 races at Churchill Downs.
Shirota’s daughter says even after her father retired, he still made his presence known on the backside. She also says her father will likely be best remembered for his tough exterior, warm heart and unique sense of humor.
