LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – They may not have won the big prize but someone in Kentucky has cashed in on a million bucks after Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing.
The winner wants to remain in the shadows, but rest assured he or she is about $690,000 richer, after taxes. It’s created quite the buzz around the Kroger in Middletown where the winner purchased the ticket.
"It's beneficial to the person who bought the ticket but it's also beneficial to Kroger," Greg Novak, a manager at Kroger, said. "Not only does it drum up excitement around the store for the associates, but the regular customers that come in on a daily basis have already heard about it and will hopefully want to come here and purchase their future Mega Millions tickets.”
Novak says his store normally sells about 500 Mega Millions tickets a day.
"I know that [Tuesday] around 10 p.m. we'd sold somewhere around 3,200," Novak said.
It’s brought in a big boost to business and a big check to cash in at the end of the day.
"The Kroger that sold the winning ticket does receive a one percent selling bonus," Sara Westerman, with Kentucky Lottery said.
In this case, that’s equal to $10,000.
"A lot of that comes back into our community. The player wins, the retailer wins, and the community in itself wins as well," Westerman said.
The biggest winners of the Mega Millions Jackpot live in California and Georgia.
The winning numbers were 8-20-14-17-39 Mega Ball 7.
Westerman recommends getting tax advice before claiming large prizes through the lottery.
It's worth noting Kentucky hasn't yet hit the Mega Millions Jackpot.
