Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - The Louisville Zoo said it needs an upgrade when it comes to its elephants.
The American Zoo Association has changed its standards on elephant exhibits and told the Louisville Zoo it needs to make changes by the end of 2015 or it could lose the elephants.
Currently, the zoo has two elephants, Punch and Mickey.
Zoo Director John Walczak said they will go beyond what is expected and create something better for the elephants, their trainers and the public.
It will allow the trainers to work with elephants without sharing a space and create an interactive area for visitors.
The changes will cost about $3 million. Walczak said the zoo is in what they call the quiet phase of looking for private money.
