LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Hundreds of people turned out Monday at the Kentucky Expo Center hoping to get a job at the Kentucky State Fair.

About 800 temporary jobs will be available throughout the month of August. Monday was the first day applications were taken.

“I’m here to gain employment,” said Darrall Bendingfield. “I have a job at night but I need some extra income.”

Bendingfield was the first person in line at the Kentucky State Fair hiring. He set up at the front door of the Kentucky Expo Center at 1 a.m., six hours before the doors opened.

“I go hard when I want some money,” said Bendingfield.

Bendingfield is looking for extra money as his two teenage daughters get ready to go back to school.

“That’s kind of the reason why I’m out here,” said Bendingfield. “They’re about to go back to school so I got to take care of them.”

The national unemployment rate sits at 8.3 percent. It's an uneasy time for Leroy Gough, 19, who is trying to enter the work force.

“Right now it’s been uncomfortable being as young as I am with no experience,” said Gough.

Gough waited in line with nearly 150 people Monday morning before the doors opened. Hundreds more are expected to apply for positions that start at $7.25 an hour. The positions at the fair vary from housekeeping to maintenance to tour guides, which are openings  Bendingfield is trying to take advantage of in a stagnant U.S. economy.

“It’s not flowing like when I was younger,” said Bendingfield. “I didn’t have a care in the world. There were jobs, you could get jobs, quit jobs and you would be fine. But those times are not here anymore and you have to hold on to what you can get anymore. It’s not good but I hope it will get better.”

All applicants must apply in person and be at least 18 years old. Applicants must have proper identification to verify work eligibility, such as a photo ID and a Social Security Card. Expired documents will not be accepted. The schedule for times and locations in which applications to apply are:
