LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - - Goshen Elementary School students crowded into the school gymnasium today to honor Fifth Grade Teacher Ruthie Parrott, the newest winner of the WHAS11--LG & E KU Excel Award.

Mrs. Parrott is a serious teacher, who knows how to have fun in the classroom.

She says if her students carry anything away from the class, it's the memory that they can have fun and learn at the same time.

Principal Lisa Peters says the learning is non-stop in Mrs. Parrott's classroom but the approach is unique.

Peters says Mrs. Parrott has the uncanny ability to ask the right questions to students. That gets them to think about what they're trying to learn and come up with their own answers. The principal says the Excel Award winner, guides her students through learning instead of teaching them what they need to do or think.

The ExCel Award honors teachers for classroom excellence and educational leadership and Parrott is in the forefront of innovative teaching strategies. Her classroom is a district laboratory setting and other teachers from the district come in to observe new teaching strategies.

Mrs. Parrott is also unique because her teaching starts not in the classroom but in the living room.
She starts the school year by visiting the home of every student and creating a relationship with the family.

By the time the students attend the first day of class, they have already met their teacher, a teacher that they will never forget.

In addition to the ExCel Golden Apple, Mrs. Parrott also receives a one thousand dollar teacher grant from LG & E KU.
