(WHAS11)-  A whopping increase in gas prices across Kentuckiana is being blamed on the flooding Mississippi River. Refineries are shut down and oil is not being shipped. So that means, we are all paying and what a jump it has been.

"It's like, do I want gas, or do I want to eat. Which do you choose?" said Mary Thomas.

"I got a whole nine gallons for $35 bucks. Isn't that something?" said Brian Taylor. "That'll get me around for a week maybe."

However, $3.79 a gallon is what we are calling cheap. On Tuesday afternoon, before the drastic spike in gas, people were lined up to fill their tanks at the "cheapest" price.

Sam's Club on Blankenbaker Parkway had a steady rotation of customers with gas priced at $3.79.

"I don't understand how we can watch the world news one day and the price for crude is dropping, and then turn around and we have to pay a lot for gas," said John.

Some blame oil speculators or Wall Street investor.  However, the big reason gas prices appear to be spiking is the concern the Mississippi River flooding will disrupt fuel output and as equities climbed.

"I feel like there's always a good excuse, and you know what, the economy is not going to get any better," said Brian Taylor.

In the meantime, the Shell gas station at Liberty and First Street sold regular unleaded gas for $4.29. That means it is about $6 for a little more than a gallon of gas, or $54 for almost 13 gallons of gas. Charles Stackhouse says the reality is that this makes his life even harder.

"I'm just eeking by. I've been unemployed. I sit at home. It's a cost to go to work. Impacts everything you buy," said Charles Stackhouse.
