LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - - Despite the sweltering heat, hundreds still came out to watch the Jeffersonville Independence Celebration.  The old fashioned parade featured marching bands, clowns and veterans.

As The Freedom Parade marched down Spring Street in downtown Jeffersonville residents young and old lined the street to celebrate our independence.

The hot temps didn't stop families from waving their flags and showing support.

For Jeffersonville resident Peggy Hardaway and her husband Jim, this is an annual tradition.

"We always come out and support the community." Peggy Hardaway said.

As a Jeffersonville High alum she stills cheers on the marching band every year.

"We brought a couple of cases of water for the band cause they are going be hot and all breathed out. So a little refreshment," Hardaway said.

Ben Werner brought his family out to see the parade too.

"My daughter was so excited to come to the parade today,"  Werner said. "I love it. It's perfect, it's America right? Small town, working people."

They brought along friends visiting from out of town. As the children caught candy and waved to parade participants, the Werner's also reflected on our troops and the sacrifice they make every day

"God bless them. Thank them for their service. We are very grateful for them. Really appreciate them," Emily Werner said.
